Becoming the Person Who Does the Thing

Over in this corner of the internet…we talk a lot about little wins - the repeatable wins, the small choices that make the big differences in life.

Because ultimately - we aren’t just checking off a list of things we are supposed to do…we are trying to become the kind of person who just does them. And the shift that we make from one to the other is where things start to FEEL like the pieces fit a bit better. Not because the choices you are making are necessarily easier - but because those choices are part of the blueprint you are creating for your identity - and when your actions & choices line up with your identity? They no longer feel as much like a list of things to do - but the things you choose to do because they make YOU feel more like YOU want to feel.

Why this matters more than the plan

Because you can have the best workout split, the most dialed-in macros, the most organized calendar…but if your internal narrative & identity still sounds like: “I’m not consistent.” “I always fall off.” “I’m just not a morning workout person.”, then every new behavior or action you try to implement is going to feel like you’re fighting yourself. Behavior change isn’t just about what you do. It’s about what you BELIEVE is true about you.

Identity is built through evidence (not affirmations)

I’m not going to tell you to stand in the mirror and repeat, “I’m consistent” 10 times. LOL. That might be the method for some people, but it’s not mine. And honestly - that’s not really how this works. Your brain isn’t just updating your identity based on what you say - but it does respond so much better when you provide it EVIDENCE.

So when you do things like:

  • show up for a 10-minute walk on a busy day

  • prep one meal instead of winging everything

  • go to bed a little earlier

  • have the Diet Coke instead of the glass of wine

  • do a 30 minute workout instead of 30 minutes of doom scrolling

Your brain logs it as:

“Oh…we’re someone who follows through.” “I’m actually someone who does this.” Not because you said it, not because you had it on a checklist, not because the internet told you it’s something you should be doing, but because you actually DID IT.

This is why small wins matter so much

Every single rep is a one more piece of proof and evidence. One more link in a chain you are building that is creating your new identity. And when you start to see that happening more regularly - when you build the proof and evidence that you ARE a person who does these things - your story shifts. Your actions feel less like coming up against a brick wall of resistance, and more like…well, like alignment.

Let’s make this practical

Instead of asking:
“What should I do this week?”

Try asking:
“What am I practicing this week that’s part of the person I’m becoming?”

Maybe it’s:

  • someone who eats protein at breakfast

  • someone who moves their body 3x/week

  • someone who shuts their laptop at a specific time to create boundaries with work

Now zoom in: What would that version of you do today?

Not in an ideal week, not when everything is perfect. Today.

The uncomfortable middle (where most people quit)

There’s a phase in this process where your actions are changing… but your identity hasn’t caught up yet (this is where it feels hard, and yeah - most people give up because it doesn’t FEEL easy yet). And despite the “I’m BUILDING this new identity”….you’re not there yet - so it FEELS like you’re faking it…maybe even forcing it. And you are second-guessing everything. Which is totally normal! But that place where it feels hard, and it feels like you’re not there yet and kind of going through the motions and feel resistance at every turn?? CHANGE IS STILL HAPPENING IN THAT SPACE! And when most people give up at this point because it’s uncomfortable, I challenge you to ask… “WHAT IF YOU STAY?”

What if you stay in the discomfort while building the evidence and proof that you can do it. Knowing that with each piece of evidence, you are locking in that shift.

Your reminder

You don’t need to wait until you feel like “that person.” or until you totally buy into that new identity - you become that person by acting like them — in small, repeatable ways. Not perfectly. But often enough that your brain starts to believe it. And if you’ve been feeling stuck between knowing what to do and actually doing it… this is usually the missing piece. You don’t need more information, you don’t need a stricter plan, you don’t need the million things the internet tells you that you need…but the thing you actually MIGHT need is…support in building that new identity.
